The "Feast of Flowers" Origins of the state name, Florida

Juan Ponce de Leon (1460-1521) He believed Florida was an island. He came ashore April 2nd, 1513; named it after the Easter feast of flowers, "Pasqua florida." After fighting Carib Indians of the Lower Antilles, he returned to Florida in 1521; he tried to establish a settlement, but was driven off by the Indians, and fatally wounded. He died in Havana, Cuba.

I instantly loved the origins of my state, Florida's name, a little something extra. *

With Easter just around the corner, it feels right to include the “feast of flower’s”, honoring the resurrection. and...honoring my Florida and the origins of the state name.

News: The Week In Review

Sacred Sunday - Already In The Past.

This past week:

Phillip Seymour Hoffman, gone too soon.

Winter Olympics began: Sochi, Russia, 2014 Winter Games on Friday, February 7.

The olympics are a show of knowledge and skill. Each country sends their best candidates. No matter the sport, it is very competitive, it is wicked hard. The timid need not apply. (I am timid to compete, not to speak;-))

Jay Leno is retired from NBC Tonight Show. Jerry Fallon begins his stint hosting the Tonight Show. All I can say is the Tonight Show has never been the same since Johnny Carson!

Looking back I am unable to change anything.
